Cathy Fox attended Utah State University, studying Business Administration and Sociology, (2003-2007). Cathy completed her Activity Director Certification in 2009 in Portland Oregon. Cathy completed the CNA program and has CPR and first aid training. She also completed in 2009, training in a specialized Hospice program titled, (NODA) “No One Dies Alone.” She volunteered in this program until she moved back to Utah in Nov. 2017.
Cathy has been trained with Memories in the Making-Alzheimer’s Association Basic Training and became a Geriatric Wellness Instructor.
In 2017 Cathy added the W.I.S.E. facilitator training to her career. W.I.S.E. is a wellness initiative for Senior Education which is designed to help them celebrate healthy aging, making healthy lifestyle choices and avoid substance abuse. WISE promotes health through education.
During 2017, Cathy completed the training for Dementia Dialogue. She specializes and loves working with Memory Care people and their families.
Cathy has spent the last 12 years in Health Care. She began her career as the Activity Director for Gresham Rehab in Gresham Oregon from 2008-2010 before joining Providence ElderPlace in Portland Oregon during 2010-2017.
Cathy has specialized in offering therapeutic activity opportunities for participants to engage in: art therapy, art journaling, Memories in the Making, Soul Collage, Project Life, Personal histories, Train your brain cognitive activities, quilting, handcrafts, many other arts and crafts. As well as Book Clubs.
In 2012 Cathy founded the Providence ElderPlace Academy. This extensive program consisted of 6-week class terms with multiple class offerings each term, such as beginning ASL, Spanish, cooking, computers, histories and life stories, Science and Arts and Crafts classes. Staff, participants as well as volunteers from the community taught these classes. Each term ended with a full graduation ceremony complete with Caps and Gowns.
Cathy served on several committees while working with Providence.: The Chairperson for The Celebrations Committee for 4 years, the Diversity Committee for 1 year and participated on the Providence ElderPlace Participant On Boarding Quality Initiative Committee. Cathy trained new Activities Directors/Life Enrichment Coordinators with Providence ElderPlace, Cathy presented to Multnomah County Adult Care Homes Expo and also Multnomah County Aging and Disability Expo, on personalizing activities to give participants quality to their lives. She has adapted tools, for people to continue using their skills, talents and keeping them inspired to be creative, whether in arts & crafts, writing music, poetry, art journaling and life histories.
Cathy was awarded the following from Providence ElderPlace: The Spirit of Emilee Mission Inspiration Award, The Excellence in Action Certificate, as well as being 1 of 11 people nationwide to be nominated for the “Marie-Louise Ansack” Award by the National PACE Association for her innovation and success with the EP Academy.
Cathy was born in Price Utah, and lived her growing up years in Emery County, mostly Huntington. After she married, they moved to Delta Utah where she raised her family. She moved to Portland Oregon in 2008. She returned home to Utah in the fall of 2017. She has 7 adult children and 19 grandchildren, (to whom she is “Grandma Cookie”), she is very proud of her family and so happy to be home living closer to them. She loves to read, quilt, embroidery, sew costumes for the grandkids, teaching quilting classes in her church, as well as having an online shop to make and sell items.
Some of her favorite things include her little teacup chihuahua Milo, and Mainecoone cat Sly, going to see the waterfalls and beautiful Oregon coast, as well as the red desert of Utah. Traveling and seeing different places, history, music, poetry, and going to the ballet, Diet Pepsi, Hershey bars with almonds, little oranges, strawberries, raspberries and vanilla bean ice cream are some favorite snacks.
Cathy was born on the 4th of July and was always told that the parades and fireworks were for her!
Cathy joined The Haven at Sky Mountain in Hurricane Utah March of 2019. She enjoys working with coworkers, and residents to make the Haven their home.
